Parents' Right to Know Headed for November Ballot

As of May 5, proponents of the Parents' Right to Know and Child Protection ballot initiative had gathered 900,000 signatures to put it on the November 7 ballot. Observers expected signatures to stream into the Sacramento and San Diego offices throughout the week of final turn-in to the counties (May 8-15) and add to the 900,000.

This proposition would require a doctor to notify at least one parent of an under-18-year-old girl before performing an abortion on the girl.

598,105 valid signatures are required to qualify a ballot proposition, but Parents' Right to Know supporters aimed for 900,000 to allow for duplicate signatures, wrong addresses, and unregistered voters who signed.

On the ballot in last November's special election as Proposition 73, Parents' Right to Know lost by the narrowest margin (5.6 percent) of all eight ballot measures, so those in favor are confident the changed circumstances of the November 2006 general election will help their chances.

Since Propositions 81 and 82 are the numbers of propositions on the June, 2006 primary election, and Jessica's Law has already qualified for November, Parents' Right to Know should be assigned a number somewhere in the mid-80s.

In the November 2005 election. Planned Parenthood and its allies outspent the Yes on 73 forces 10-1. But this time the Parents' Right to Know forces are counting on a wider base of donors and volunteers to come close to matching the pro-abortion forces.
