SURVEY RESULTS DO NOT REFLECT POST-VATICAN II MINDSET

I am a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Community in Concord. I had never read your paper before and was given a copy by a friend of mine. I could not believe what I read. There was an article on the Bay Area's best and worst parishes [See also March 2001 News]. St. Bonaventure Catholic Community in Concord (not Walnut Creek) was noted to have a drum-set in a prominent place. I would like to correct your paper on the true facts on the drum-set. The drums were used to help our Led By The Spirit choir at nine in the morning to produce a CD. This CD is being sold to help raise money for several charities. The owner of the set took many hours of his own time to help us out. Second, the drums are where an old organ sat for twenty years off to the far side of the church by the choir area. The organ broke and was replaced. St. Bonaventure Catholic Community is one of the most giving parish communities. We have a pastor who allows us to serve the true needs of the community. We feed the poor, house the homeless.... Your article states that St. Agnes has a hot tub [Actually St. Francis of Assisi -- ER]. St. Agnes has a baptismal fount. Full immersion is closer to how Jesus would have been baptized than pouring small amounts of water over a child's or adult's head. St. Francis is not broke. It had some work redone after the construction was botched by the crews who worked on the rebuilding of the once Most Prescious Blood. Yes, it did run into much money to repair, but the parish is not closing to my understanding.

Your article stated [the] Newman Center in Berkeley was an ugly eyesore. It is too bad no one bothered to see what the parish does for those in need. I took care of a bed-bound man for a year and several wonderful parishioners brought him a fresh home-cooked meal every Sunday afternoon. The list continues, but you, I am sure, get my point. Let us not point the finger. Look to the good. I am ashamed that the Roman Church still after Vatican II has such narrow-minded people.

Yours in Christ,

Daniel Patrick Sullivan
St. Bonaventure Catholic Community

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

Thank you for sending the San Francisco Faith. Keep up your good work. The laity is going to "save" the Church in America.

A WONDERFUL SERVICE

I think you're doing a wonderful service of keeping Catholics informed on issues that we would never know of. With all the liberalism that seems to be predominant in the majority of our churches, I sometimes get the feeling that I'm all alone. Consequently, it's nice to receive the Faith. Thank you.

In Christ,

MEDJUGORJE IS TRUE

Please send me Father Ted Shipp. I am an American Croation. I believe Medjugorje is true. I've read extensively, I've been there and have met four of the visionaries. The late Bishop Zanic was dishonest and so is his successor, Bishop Peric.

In our Lord and DOR Croation Gospa,

John Blazenic

NO OFFENSE INTENDED

Thank you for your scrutiny of my letter ["Experience Medjugorje Personally," January 2001 Letters]. My sincere apology to you and our Blessed Mother if I mislead anyone about her blessing. I certainly never intended to imply a Trinitarian heresy. Giving blessings to one's children is biblically based and Mary addresses us as "Dear Children." I understood she was humbly saying her blessing was a motherly blessing to help convert their lives to God while a priest (by virtue of his ordination) blesses you with Jesus Christ's blessing. Never is Our Lady other than the humble handmaid of the Lord.

Finally, let me affirm I have been to Medjugorje and I believe it is a true apparition site. Many apparitions have been vigorously opposed and later approved and after 19 years it has not been officially condemned. However, the Catholic Church is far more than Medjugorje, Fatima, Lourdes, LaSallette, or Guadalupe apparitions, so I will always accept her authority and final decision. Joining you in prayer for the conversion of a needful humanity. I will always accept her authority and final decision. Joining you in prayer for the conversion of a needful humanity I hope this letter does not offend you in any way.

Sincerely,

Naomi Tambornini
