LETTERS APRIL 1999
I HOPE YOU GO UNDER I object very much to your publication. I find that your distorted, biased, disloyal, mean-spirited publication is destructive of our faith. I think you would be doing the Church a great favor if you went broke and went out of business. I was at the Weakland lecture. Your article on that was very distorted and didn't dare quote Weakland's comment in support of the Pope [see "The New Yorker Bishop", March Faith]. You have done an unfair job on this man. He is one of the best bishops in the United States. 'Tis is one example of the silliness of your publication. Fr. Thomas Devereaux Healsburg
STAR ON THE HORIZON With all of the discouraging news these days of various abuses in the Church, a bright star emerged on the horizon last August on the outskirts of Denver. Cor Jesu, a little seminary dedicated to forming solid Roman Catholic priests, opened its doors to 11 novices, with 12 entering this fall. They are housed in a vacated convent but since they have no income, they rely solely on the generosity of the laity. Here is a wonderful opportunity for those of us who really want to participate in the rebuilding of our Church. Seminaries such as Cor Jesu, dedicated to authentic Roman Catholic teaching, will not survive without the generous support of faithful benefactors. They have the vocations; they deserve our prayers, encouragement, and financial assistance to bring these young men and future vocations to the priesthood. Let's give them a hand! Donations should be sent to: Father Anthony J. Mastroeni, Cor Jesu Mission Fund, Inc. 4040 Pierce Street, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. M.J. McLauchlin Livermore
YOUR CRITICS FEAR THE TRUTH James Russell Lowell wrote: "To every man and nation comes the moment to decide, in the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side." Perhaps we could add "religion" after "nation." Your critics in March 1999 issue are mightily afraid of the truth. On the national front, our only truth of late has come from the 13 House managers, plus many other Republicans and some Democrats in our House of Representatives. The love of truth was strangely absent in many souls in the Senate trial. Keep up your fine work! We, who love you, know you are on the side of truth. As the poem goes, "In life's broad field of battle in the bivouac of life be not like dumb driven cattle be a hero in the strife." That's you, San Francisco Faith. Ms. A. Cooney Oakland
CHEAPER THAN TOILET PAPER The price of Costco toilet paper has gone up so we are most grateful for the usefulness of your paper, especially since it represents such a hateful and questionable Christian point of view. We are a committed same-sex couple who share the same last name and members of a truly loving Roman Catholic parish, Most Holy Redeemer. Robert Van Etten Thomas Van Etten San Francisco
THANKS FOR PROTECTING THE FAITH After reading all the disgruntled letters in the March issue, I felt compelled to write and express our sincere gratitude and admiration for the wonderful work you are doing in support of the faith. We find the paper informative and well-written. We look forward to each issue with interest and pleasure. We pass back issues to friends or leave in the vestibule at church to further spread the message. Barbara McCarthy Milpitas
LIBERAL CATHOLICS WON'T TOLERATE THE TRUTH Liberal Catholics will allow any point of view so long as it is liberal. You will continue to get hate mail labeling you as "divisive" and "negative" as long as you report about influential Catholic who contradict what the Catechism teaches about birth control and homosexuality. Your news item about vandalism of pro-life clinics on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade is another example of news that apostate Catholics would rather not hear. Greg Wood Los Banos
