LETTERS JUNE 2002
BE PREPARED TO GIVE EVERYONE AN ANSWER Thank you so very much for your quality lay-Catholic newspaper that, "earnestly contends for the faith once and for all delivered to the Holy ones" (Jude 3). You are to be commended for showing the lay ministry how to "be prepared to give everyone an answer, a reason for the hope -- with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15). Thank you for printing the Catholic Answers Live radio schedule. I would also encourage you to publish the AM radio frequencies that carry the excellent programming schedule throughout the North state (KSMH 1620, West Sacramento). May God continue to bless you as you proclaim the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the love of His holy Church. Sincerely Yours in Christ, Prisoner Ione
WHAT A CONTRAST I can't get over the clear contrast between the priests you featured on the front cover of your May issue [see "Jerry's Children", and "Fessio Exiled"]. One is a known pederast, another is the superior who is helping him (featured in civilian clothes) and the only one known for his orthodoxy, Father Fessio, who is also the only one being persecuted by his own Church. This juxtaposition of clergy clearly shows what is wrong with our Church. Thanks for a great issue. Bob Frankes Santa Rosa
NO QUARTER WILL BE GIVEN I am furious over the treatment of Father Fessio and the way things are being handled at the University of San Francisco. I hope when Privett's little experiment crashes and burns, as much quarter will be given to them as they gave Fessio. Thank you for sending me the Faith. Kari Otonolowski Fremont
WHAT ARE THEY AFRAID OF? I've been following the events at USF both in your paper and in others. I was struck by Father Fessio's plea [May Faith] that while people disagree, why not allow different points of view and talk about it? Isn't this what is supposed to happen in academia? The cold shoulder USF is giving Father Fessio in response demonstrates the extent to which the rot has taken over. Not only are they not interested in imparting and supporting the teachings of the Church, they don't even want to discuss it. I'll be sending my kids to Campion. As far as USF is concerned, there are much better versions of what they offer that charge less tuition. Brea Gallagher San Francisco
GOOD-BYE, FATHER FESSIO Along with many others who are mourning the old institute at USF, the removal of Father Fessio from his offices near USF is the biggest tragedy of all. That the Jesuits would remove a priest of his caliber from a community that has never needed him more is a very bitter pill to swallow. But I don't think there is much reason for Catholics to punish USF for all the bad things that have happened over the past year. Like any other consumers, potential students will continue to ask, "what is the product?" Even if the Jesuits are capable of answering this question honestly, they don't seem willing to acknowledge how mediocre the product has become. Without orthodoxy, their corruption will increase and parents will see no reason to pay the high tuition when their sons and daughters can get a "better' education at public schools without the Catholic window dressing. Thus, I think it will not be long before the entire school blows away like dust. Brian Kippler Half Moon Bay
