LETTERS JULY/AUGUST 2002
WHAT'S GOING ON? I read with horror the article by Allyson Smith about the conference in Kentucky that promoted homosexuality ["Confusion and Scandal", June Faith]. It's bad enough that a few renegade priests and nuns were in attendance, but bishops too? I feel like we are reaching a point when it is too obvious that some Catholics are practicing a completely different religion. My hope is that the Holy Father invites some of these to be Protestants. Yes, it would be regrettable to lose members of the flock, but this is a better alternative to the confusion these folks cause among the faithful. With bishops endorsing this stuff, why is it surprising that so many adolescent men are fooled into being the sexual play-things of homosexual clergy? Duh! Beatrice Garcia Walnut Creek
WE CAN'T TOLERATE THIS I read your piece on the Kentucky homosexual conference. I can't tell you how mad this makes me. There has been a lot of talk about "reform" since the scandals started piling up. The newspapers report that this means the laity will assert themselves and have more power. If this means we will now be able to expel homosexual priests from our churches and universities and tar and feather those who abuse our sons, then I am all for it. Ray Hines Pacifica
BRING ON THE
INQUISITION After reading "Confusion and Scandal" in your June issue, I feel like we have been abandoned by Rome. How is it possible, in the current climate, that homosexuals are able to be so bold? The current system of discipline is simply not working. We need to bring back the Inquisition, Spanish-style. I am utterly disgusted by Am-Church. Absent any action by Rome, it appears our only hope is to wait until the Vatican II generation is in the ground. Maybe then we will be able to take back our Catholic faith from the homosexual dilettantes who call themselves priests. Brad Eisenberg received via email
