LETTERS OCTOBER 1997
THE CHAMBERLAIN DEFENSE Archbishop Levada's defense of his incredible cave-in to Mayor Willie Brown on the domestic partners coverage issue was reminiscent of Neville Chamberlain's failure to stand up to Hitler on the eve of World War II [see "What Did We Agree To?" and "One More Battering Ram", September]. The British Prime Minister returned to London certain that he had won "peace in our time." To raise homosexuality to the dignity and status of marriage runs counter to everything Sacred Scripture and the Church stands for. Archbishop Levada could have won himself a place in history by standing up to that political bully Willie Brown. Why didn't he just close down Catholic Charities and tell Brown to take care of the city's needy himself? For shame, Archbishop Levada! P.S.: The Faith is like a breath of fresh air in San Francisco. M. Anderson San Francisco
GOOD COVERAGE OF CAPITULATIONS I particularly enjoyed the debate between Archbishop Levada and Michael Uhlmann [see "What Did We Agree To?" and "One More Battering Ram", September]. I also enjoyed the short pieces on Ming Chin, Nancy Pelosi, and USF president Fr. John Schlegel [see News, September]. It seems that USF is a centerpiece of problems in the Church. Ed McGill Novato
