STOPPED MIDWAY IN NOVENA

Just a note in support of Mr. Sevilla's open letter to Father Brunsman (October Faith). I stopped attending midway in the novena to St. Anne in July because of what is described in the letter -- and more. Instead of giving novenas and retreats, Father Brunsman should be attending a comprehensive course on Catholicism.

Thank you for your good work.

MADE ME PROUD

I write to thank you for keeping us informed on our reading ... good or bad whatever turns you on. Mr. John-David Black -- a special thank-you for his article, "In Serra's footsteps" in your October issue. It really made me proud to relate to the article since I am a Volunteer Tour Docent at Old Mission Dolores in San Francisco and it inspired me as to how much faith he had in his journey along the various missions in our state. It is persons such as him that keep Father Serra's spiritual life alive and still practicing what he preached, "always go forward and never turn back." The facts of Mr. Black's historic journey will be a wonderful topic to be shared in my public school tours that I have presented over the years at Mission Dolores.

NOT A PRIVATE FAITH

I want to thank you for your article, "Deeds of Mercy," in the October edition of your paper. I know that you are a conservative paper. I am not, but I enjoyed the story very much. I think too often Catholics are led to think that ours is a strictly private faith. I recall from my childhood in San Francisco participating in many processions in the city to celebrate feast days. Such processions today could also serve to bring more people into the Church. If all of us Catholics would go out together to publicly display our faith once in a while, I am sure it would be quite a surprise to people in the city to actually see how many of us are still practicing -- and quite an inspiration to other Catholics!

Thank you again for the fine article. My prayers are with Thelma Orias and her volunteers.

WHEN I DRIVE BY

I was deeply touched by your news piece on the work done by Mrs. Hitchcock and Mrs. Donnely on their work praying and counseling at abortion clinics [see News, October]. For the most part their kind of work is either ignored or disparaged by the media. But you marvelously illustrate how people just like them save lives every day. It is also very important to show the effectiveness of prayer and non-violence. Even if we can't stop abortion completely, we can still save many lives. When I drive by the demonstrations at the South Bay abortion mill you describe, I feel glad that there are people out there who have the courage to take positive action while so many of us rest in the comfort of our convictions. Moreover, please continue reporting on the many options and services there are for young women who need the support and counseling to choose life.
