LETTERS DECEMBER 2001
RID JUDGMENTAL THOUGHTS FROM OUR HEADS I am writing in response to your article, "Kopp in the Dock; Is the FBI Framing a San Francisco Pro-lifer?" in the September Faith. In our country, we are supposed to live by "innocent until proven guilty," but in actuality, we live by "guilty until proven innocent." This is obvious, as you have exemplified in your article. Kopp is said to have murdered an abortion doctor, but there is a plethora of questionable evidence. Notwithstanding the fact that he might be guilty, we, as a society, should not label him as though he had committed the crime, until it is proven. People need to keep open minds and rid the judgmental thoughts from our heads. Ashley Retuta University of the Pacific Stockton
IS DAVIS REALLY CATHOLIC? I am flabbergasted by Governor Davis -- not because he is pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage, but because he is both these and also a Catholic. When a high profile Catholic takes positions that directly contradict those of the Church, is this not a scandal? If the bishops don't censure him, then are we to think that we can promote abortion, allow our minor daughters to have them and still be good Catholics? Sincerely, Bob Phelt San Francisco
WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY I saw your paper for the first time and I am so glad that a Catholic publication is so focused on pro-life issues. It seems that our Church leadership is so afraid of offending anyone they are reluctant to tell the truth. We need to be vigilant. The September 11 attacks have shaken the nation's conscience -- this is a great time to convert hearts and minds. Keep up the good work. Sincerely, Theresa Castle Napa
WHO'S IN CHARGE? I read with dismay the news short on Father Sparks' appearance in Los Angeles and New York ["Father Sparks' Supporters Lash Out," November Faith]. I realize that many priests in the Bay Area have a liberal bent, but is it too much to ask that they refrain from travelling around and embarassing themselves? Who's in charge of keeping order in the Oakland diocese? Lynn Hoppe Oakland
EXCOMMUNICATE PRO-ABORTION CATHOLICS Thank God for authentic, orthodox, loyal, Catholic publications such as yours which fearlessly present the truth; so different from the wishy-washy nonsense of most diocesan yell-rags. Your marvelous powerful article "They Don't Have to Like Me," by Robert Kumpel [November Faith] does one's heart good. Would that our spineless, anemic, "I am OK, everybody is OK," weak bishops have the same backbone as Greg Cunningham. Shame on our bishops who appear to lack the fortitude given by the Holy Spirit. If these weak, heads-in-the-sand bishops were doing what God expects of them, so-called Catholic politicians would have been excommunicated long ago when they pass pro-abortion, anti-family laws.
