ENCOURAGES FAIR TRADE
Thank you for the article on the distinction of Fair Trade, and how "free" trade can drive out of business small farmers and businessmen [see "Don't Roll Over on This Stuff"]. Here in Honduras one of our best products is delicious coffee. Honduras also has many other exportable items whose production would provide employment to the many who need it here. I pray that this idea take root and catch on among Americans, particularly among Catholics.

RETRO WATCHDOG
I find it very sad and even reprehensible that your newspaper is acting as a "watchdog" on the church from a "retro-Catholic" vantage point. Pope John XXIII did a wonderful thing opening our eyes and our hearts to be more accepting of sinners. Even Jesus said, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

WHY BROWN?
I'm a bit confused by the article, "Groovy St. Patrick's" [September Faith]. Why didn't Archbishop Levada select a rector more amenable to his views in the first place? Are you suggesting that Levada was not in control of the hiring process or that Brown was imposed upon him? Please clarify.
Denis Kray, San Francisco
Editor replies: I was suggesting nothing as to why Archbishop Levada selected Sulpician Father Gerald Brown as rector of St. Patrick's seminary. That Brown was chosen and what sort of man Brown is was the theme of the article.
