EMBARRASSED
Golly, I'm not exactly sure where to begin. I am so embarrassed. I've been on your mailing list for a long time, perhaps several years. But I've not taken the time to read a full article until this morning. It was about Father Richard Sparks and his Pride Mass in Berkeley [see "He's Not Your Typical Priest," September Faith]. I was so excited to see a topic dear to my heart and dove in with hopeful anticipation. As I read more and more, my heart sank. I became saddened to see that the author's point of view is so narrow-minded and self-righteous. I found the perspective very unsettling and painful.
I would respectfully ask that you take me off of your mailing list. I am embarrassed to have been receiving this kind of a publication for so long. I believe it causes divisiveness and exclusion. I believe we should look at healing our ruptured relationships. We love with God when we are the conduit for God's reconciling presence with the person next to us -- even if they are gay. And I doubt we will ever know exactly did happen between Mary Magdalene and Jesus. I very much believe that we should be patient toward all that is unsolved within our hearts and try to love the questions themselves.

VIGNERON AN ENABLER
Mr. James' scrupulously documented article on Father Richard Sparks begs the question of His Excellency Bishop Allen Vigneron. Two years after being presented incontrovertible video, audio, and print evidence of Father Sparks' apostasy, blasphemy, and subversion of Catholic teaching, why does Sparks remain a pastor in the Oakland diocese "in good standing?" Why is he thus enabled by Bishop Vigneron to spew diabolical excreta befouling Catholic consciences across the continent?
Silence, concealment, and failure to discipline are among the several ways that we participate in the sins of others, so Bishop Vigneron is culpable for every soul lost to the influence of infamous priests he knowingly and scandalously continues "in good standing" in his diocese. His Excellency is an enabler. He is the father who, asked for bread and fish, gives us stones and serpents. With sincere concern for His Excellency's salvation, it is true charity to tell him so.
St. Peter Damian, Doctor of the Church, reformer, and author of the Book of Gomorrah [Letter 31], pray for us!
